Kaanapali Beach Wedding: Insider Tips for Maui's Iconic Beach

Expert tips for ceremony location, permits, and capturing the best moments at this 3-mile beach

The Appeal: Natural Beauty and Accessibility

Kaanapali Beach stretches three miles of golden sand—the expansive beach provides room for multiple ceremonies, various guest configurations, and ample space for photography without feeling crowded.

Pu'u Keka'a (Black Rock) is an actual volcanic rock formation rising directly from the beach and ocean, creating an iconic, dramatic silhouette instantly recognizable as Maui. Kaanapali's west-facing orientation means spectacular sunsets illuminate the beach daily.

Permit Requirements

You must obtain a permit from Maui County to legally hold a wedding ceremony on Kaanapali Beach. Operating without a permit can result in fines and ceremony interruption.

Contact Maui County Parks Department 4-6 months in advance. Provide exact ceremony date and time, guest count, specific location, and setup details. Permit costs typically range from $75-$250.

Choosing Your Ceremony Location

North Kaanapali (near Sheraton) is slightly less crowded with good Black Rock positioning. Central Kaanapali offers maximum visual impact with Black Rock directly in background—most iconic, recognizable backdrop.

Early morning ceremonies (6-8 AM) experience dramatically fewer tourists. The beach feels nearly private. Sunset ceremonies (5-7 PM) feature iconic golden hour light but mean maximum beach traffic.

Photography Strategy

Professional photographers understand how to position you relative to Black Rock: frontal positioning for the iconic backdrop, angled positioning for dimensional compositions, wide-angle for epic scale, or close-ups emphasizing your couple dynamic.

Golden hour light (first hour after sunrise or last 1-2 hours before sunset) provides the most flattering, romantic illumination. Many couples schedule ceremonies to maximize golden hour photography opportunities.
