How to Get a Hawaii Marriage License: Step-by-Step

Everything about getting a marriage license in Hawaii - cost, application, requirements

The Basics

Hawaii marriage licenses cost $65 and are valid for 30 days after issuance. You must be at least 18 years old and have valid government-issued ID (passport or driver's license).

There's no residency requirement, no blood test, and no waiting period. Once you have your license, you can get married the same day.

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Start your application online at emrs.ehawaii.gov. You'll enter information for both partners and pay the $65 fee.

Step 2: Schedule a meeting with a licensed marriage agent. These agents are located throughout the islands and can meet you at your hotel, the airport, or another convenient location.

Step 3: At your agent meeting, you'll verify your identities with your IDs and sign the license application. This takes about 15 minutes.

Step 4: Get married! Your officiant will complete the license after the ceremony.

Step 5: Your officiant submits the completed license to the Department of Health within 10 days. Your official marriage certificate will be mailed to you.

Common Questions

Can we meet with the agent the day before? Yes! Many couples do the agent meeting the day before their ceremony to have one less thing to worry about on the wedding day.

Do we need witnesses? No. Hawaii does not require witnesses for a legal marriage ceremony.

Can we do a legal ceremony now and a celebration later? Absolutely. Many couples have a small legal ceremony in Hawaii and then celebrate with a larger reception back home. This is especially popular for destination weddings.
