Best Elopement Locations on Maui: A Photographer's Picks

Our favorite spots for Maui elopements from secret coves to volcanic craters

Makena Cove (Secret Beach)

This secluded cove with dramatic lava rocks is peak Maui romance. Best at sunrise when the light is soft and the beach is empty. The natural framing of the rocks creates an intimate ceremony setting.

Fair warning: it's popular with photographers, so sunrise is key for privacy. But at dawn, you'll likely have it to yourself.

Ironwoods Beach, Kapalua

Less crowded than the famous beaches, Ironwoods offers incredible sunset light and a more rugged aesthetic. The ironwood trees provide beautiful natural framing.

Access requires a short walk, which keeps the casual tourists away. Perfect for couples who want something a bit more private.

Haleakala National Park

At roughly 10,000 feet above sea level, Haleakala summit looks like another planet, and the dramatic volcanic landscape creates images unlike anything else in Hawaii.

Important: Haleakala is a National Park and tightly restricts ceremonies. Weddings here generally require a Special Use Permit from the National Park Service, group sizes are limited, and sunrise viewing itself requires a separate advance reservation. Many couples opt for a small ceremony or portraits rather than a large wedding at the summit. Always confirm current rules and secure the necessary permits before planning, and bring warm layers.

Kapalua Bay

Calm, crystal-clear water with a resort-adjacent location. This is perfect for couples who want beach beauty with easy access. The bay is protected, so the water is usually calm and swimmable.

Great for ceremonies and for couples who want to wade into the water for photos without worrying about waves.

Nakalele Blowhole Area

Wild, rugged, and absolutely dramatic. The coastline here features heart-shaped rock pools and crashing waves against lava rock. It's not for everyone, but for the right couple, it's perfect.

Requires some hiking and the terrain can be challenging in formal wear. But the payoff is extraordinary.

Twin Falls, North Shore

This is one of the few waterfall locations on Maui that permits commercial photography. The bamboo forest trail leads to a beautiful cascade surrounded by lush greenery. Access is on private land, so confirm current access and any requirements with the property before planning a shoot here.

Best earlier in the day before crowds arrive. The rainforest setting offers a completely different vibe from beach locations.

Wailea Beach Path

Don't underestimate this option. The path connects several beaches and offers multiple backdrops within a 20-minute walk: sandy beaches, lava rocks, manicured resort grounds, and ocean views.

Great for couples who want variety without traveling far, especially if you're staying at a Wailea resort.
